Living “green” or “off the grid” has propelled many people to purchase electric cars. The number may be growing slowly, but it is growing just the same. Every day, more and more people are turning to electric cars as an alternative to the gas-guzzling, pollution-generating vehicles we traditionally drive. Some factors related to owning electric cars make the decision difficult. Repair and maintenance costs tend to be higher than with gasoline-driven models. The length of time the battery can operate is another.

People are reluctant to own an electric car, drive it somewhere, and then be unable to recharge, if necessary. Fortunately, the number of charging stations for electric cars is increasing as the cars grow in popularity.

For example, Recargo recently charted the number of charging stations for electric cars across the map between January of 2011 and May of 2013. In that short two year period, the number of chargers available for public use increased ten times over. In 2011, only 1,972 stations existed in all of the United States. By May of 2013, however, that number had swelled to over 20,000. The number is still climbing and, naturally, there are a large number of stations in California, but it seems like the rest of the nation is finally getting on board.

Even the numbers for electric car sales are impressive. In the same time frame, sales went from a meager 18,000, to start, and are expected to top 100,000 during 2013. Obviously, electric cars are here to stay, and the number of charging stations that service them will continue to grow, as well.
