Solar Power Comes to the Las Vegas Strip

When it comes to cities that use a lot of power, Las Vegas usually comes to mind. With all the neon signs on the Las Vegas Strip, there is a lot of electricity being used to attract visitors to stay and play. The iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign is still running on electricity, but it is now being powered by solar panels that are linked to the sign.

Solar panels have been attached to 25-foot towers to provide the power for this historical sign to stay lit as a welcoming beacon for tourists and gambling enthusiasts. The move is just one of the latest public works projects in the US that makes use of solar panel kits as a renewable power source. It is a joint project funded by both nonprofits and NV Energy.

More and more local governments are seeing the benefits of solar power kits as a source of affordable and dependable energy. This move by Las Vegas proves that solar power can be effectively used in a variety of ways, and not just for home power usage. Solar power in public buildings and tourist attractions may very well be the next big thing in solar power.

Solar power creates clean energy with no negative effects on the environment. For cities like Las Vegas that are known for the glow of neon lights, solar energy could be a way to keep the iconic style, without harming the environment or costing taxpayers thousands of dollars for utility costs.
